OVERVIEW:
The meaning of the “heavens” – the spanning sky – is an archetype across all cultures. Since the first humans looked upward we have pressed our deepest feelings into that radiant surround. When we look up and out imaginative intuitions are formed in the sky and cosmos above. There we find initial forms that give our utopic aspirations a place beyond – a transcendent place that drives the creativity in the arts, sciences, and technologies here upon the Earth. These accomplishments then allow us to look ever further upward in an ever expanding looping out and back.
Within such an expanding holistic vision of cosmos, ranging from the cosmos to the minutest energy-packet – from the infinite to the finite in time and space, fundamental ‘creativity’ requires unfettered freedom that is spiritual, emotional and physical – transcending existing boundaries.
This workshop’s gathering will disclose the extraordinary challenges to the Arts at the dawn of humanity’s movement into the solar system.
OBJECTIVES:
- To gather a significant portion of the major space artists in the world whose art is about outer space, zero gravity as well as other space-engaged cultural scholars and educators, advocates and representatives of significant institutions (i.e. space agencies, universities and media). This will be a unique context for cataloging the cultural framework of Humanity in Space.
- To present artists’ and scholars’ projects old and new to develop a summary overview of what has happened and is happening that can be of use to the entire global space arts community in future planning and action.
- To produce open and confident engagement with space-oriented organizations, government agencies, institutions and corporations leading to a sustainable global body of experience, common practice and policy.
- To develop a plan for a growing Space Culture (“Exospherics”) main “track” (“Living in Space”) for ISDC2014 in Los Angeles, with attendant exhibition potentials, as well as other future international venues. Furthering the concept that the meaning of the ‘heavens’ is an archetype across all cultures both historic and contemporary.
- To coalesce technological goals to consolidate and interconnect Space Arts Archives and to bring together a logical and efficient organization of activity that will Enable much more international collaboration.
- To develop Space Arts curricula with specific examples.
- To develop a scholarly peer-reviewed online Journal of Space Art and Culture (JSAC.com) that is accessible to the global community, inspiring dedication to documentation and scholarly stewardship.
